Mind games are at peak level ahead of José Aldo vs. Conor McGregor, to the point that people might have even forgotten that there’s a surefire barnburner between Rory MacDonald and Robbie Lawler for the welterweight title co-headlining July 11th’s UFC 189 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Conor McGregor recently posted a photo of him looking very intensely at the camera, as though to rip right through Aldo’s soul, wherever the Brazilian champion might be in the world. He captioned the image with a foreboding “Tick-Tock.” Meanwhile, Aldo’s response wasn’t the sharpest but it was funny in that nonchalant-Aldo way. It sort of shows how little he cares. He tweeted, “I’m terrified. Not even gonna sleep tonight.” What he didn’t translate was a final line saying, “look how worried I am, @TheNotoriousMMA” over an image of him hanging loose, smiling with the featherweight strap over his shoulder.
The back-and-forth psychological push-and-shove between these two stellar featherweights has even presented sponsoring brands the chance to add fuel to the fire. Aldo’s sponsor TNT Energy Drink—also the official energy drink of F1 stalwars Scuderia Ferrari—launched an animated ad in which Aldo forges his crown with his fists. It all takes place in the bowels of a castle perched atop a blustery hill.
The ad finishes up with a tagline: “No one is king by chance. The games are over.”
